Description: |
Located at 740 metres above sea-level, it is the smallest municipality in the National Park of the Sibillini Mountains and, with its population of 136 inhabitants, it is also the least populated. Its name is of uncertain origin, although it probably refers to its position, overlooking the Fiastrone valley. After having been a feudal domain of the Conte Menardo di Sigfredo, it was a possession of the Benedictine monks who built the “San Salvatore di Rio Sacro” Abbey; then, in the XV century, the village became a free Commune, but still under the influence of the duchy of Camerino; the well-known strategic fortification walls made by De Varano date back to that period.
Nearby ‘Piani di Ragnolo’ is a popular skiing resort renowned for its slopes and cross-country skiing routes.
