Description: |
Bolognola is a mountain site belonging to the “Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini”, at more than 1000m altitude (the highest municipality of the whole region). There has been some doubt as to whether the original village really owes its name to Bona, a goddess of umbro-celtic origins worshipped in most pre-historic Europe. Other studies suggest that the name of the village should actually be related to its foundation by three different families from Bologna, escaped from the war between the Guelph and the Ghibelline parties. Despite the disagreement among scholars, this account of the events could be proved by the fact that the village is actually devided into three hamlets: Villa Pepoli, Villa Malvezzi, Villa Bentivoglio. It belonged to the Da Varano family up until the XVII century; the ruins of an imposing fortified building date back to that time. Quite a few relics, especially those unearthed from the dungeons of the delightful ‘Palazzo Primavera’, apparently attest to the development of the village in the XVII century as a flourishing wool trade centre.
In the surroundings, walkers are offered quite a few possibilities for excursions, especially towards the Fargno valley, to the Falls of Acqua Santa and to Pizzo Tre Vescovi, where the two dioceses of Camerino and Fermo meet.
