Description: |
The urban area, at 414 m., is located on the top of a hill, which has undoubtedly helped to defend the town over the centuries, especially when the turmoil following the end of the Roman law and order forced the inhabitants of the Roman city of Urbs Salvia to escape and take refuge here in Colmurano,
During the Middle Ages, it was a fortified feudal domain of the ruling Gualtieri family, then it fell under the authority of the neighbouring Tolentino, which maintained its control on the town by exerting its influence on the decisions of the local government, and leaving it a reasonable autonomy, proved some local statutes that have survived to this day. Large sections of the XIV and XV century castle walls still exist and are well preserved, not unlike the defensive tower of Porta di San Rocco, the only one of the medieval period to have survived intact.
From the urban area one cannot help but enjoy the outstanding natural view of the Sibillini mountains and their countless hiking paths. Colmurano is also known for hosting ‘Artistrada’, an international buskers Festival taking place each early July with the aim of giving value to the old popular art of street performers; other events such as ´Magicabula´ and the ´Biennale dell´illustrazione´, are worth visiting, too.
