Description: |
Comunanza lies exactly where the fertile Aso valley broadens at the foot of the Sibillini mountains, and it is the only spot in the region not placed on top of a hill. Although it had probably been populated already in Roman times, the town expanded rapidly during the V and VI centuries, thanks to some refugees from the neighbouring town Ascoli who left their homes to escape from the invasions of the Goths and the Lombards. Even its name has its origin in the place-name ´comunali di Ascoli´.
The historical events of these places forced then the town to provide for its own defense by building an imposing stronghold at Monte Pasillo.
The current urban area comes in a triangular shape and spans the river Aso extanding on both of its banks: the older part of the town is on the right side of the river, while the modern village extends on the left.
The town is also the renowned birthplace of such great painters as Antonio Amorosi, Sebastiano, Giuseppe e Pierleone Ghezzi, leaders of the cultural life of the ‘urbe’, who lived between the Marche region and Rome between 1600 and 1700. A living nativity scene has been organized for thirty years on St. Stephan’s Day and most of the population takes part in it.
