Description: |
Placed on the Fornace stream’s upper vally, the area belonging to Fiordimonte´s municipality is composed of a number of hamlets perched high on various hills below the high peaks of the Sibillini mountains. The Town Hall, in the hamlet called Castello, is located at an altitude of 520m, but other hamlets can reach about 700m.
From the pre-Roman times, an architrave with a Picenian inscription unearthed at Villanova has survived to the present and is now exposed in the ´R.Campelli´ Museum in Pievebovigliana, while a temple of the same period is supposed to have stood in the surroundings. Some written records of the 1300’s inform us about the existence of a defensive stronghold named ‘castle of Fiordimonte´, with large stretches of walls and an arched entrance gate that are still intact. Each hamlet can boast houses of great historical value, built from limestone or from local sandstone, starting from 1400. The village is also renowned for its faunistic and venatorial company “Valle di Fiordimonte”, a paradise for hunters whose premises cover an area extending over 3000 hectares, offering an excellent natural habit for a large number of animal species, especially for birds as the gray partridge and the coturnix.
