Description: |
Its current name was given by the Napoleonic soldiers during their occupation. Its previous one was Monsampolo, and it consisted in a series of hamlets located at differing altitudes, between 700 and 1500 m.
Since 1230 the territory had been one of the wide feudal domains of the Conti Baschi of Orvieto, between the two rivers Nera and Chienti, then the town was sold to the Da Varano family of Camerino and eventually to the Church. The castle was located just above the current main centre.
Set among majestic peaks and rocky mountain sides, coated in with thick woods with age-old forest trees, such as the one called “Bosco delle Pianotte”, the area surrounding Monte Cavallo is unquestionably of the most charming of the Sibillini mountains. South of the main centre, a narrow road along the bottom of the valley leads you through what has been called a “health-trail” to a little church named Madonna della Valle, and, further on, to the water-springs called Le Vene and I Trocchi, which are found at Collattoni.
In the surrounding area there are also several cycle paths.
